Woodpark Sunflower Project
Lets grow sunflowers to brighten our little neighbourhood. If possible, find a spot in your front yard or garden so we can all see your flowers!
How to grow sunflowers well in the city
The trick to growing sunflowers in the city is keeping our bunnies away from the yummy tender shoots. Once sunflowers get large enough, they aren't as delicious and will grow into a proper beautiful plant. To do this you can either start inside or outside, here are some tips.
Put holes in the bottom of your decorated cups, fill with soil and place in a sunny window. Plant the seed a little into the earth, cover well and water a little everyday. The sun is getting brighter and warmer so don't forget to water! If the window isn't sunny enough the sunflower will get "leggy" reaching for light and it might make a weaker plant. Starting inside is a good step for someone with a sunny windowsill.
When the soil has warmed up, mid-May, find a sunny spot and plant seeds a bit down into soil and cover well. Don't forget to water!
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SEEDLING OR SEEDS IN THE GARDEN
Take a plastic clear container, some wire or any other cool contraption that still allows light and water in to make a barrier between your seedlings or seeds and bunnies. A taller plastic bottle without a label cut open to a cylinder will work. Chicken wire wrapped into a cylinder buried down is what I often do! When the seedling gets past the tender small stage you can remove the protection and it should be fine.
